An Adaptive Approach to Derive Sea Ice Draft from Upward-Looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), Validated by Upward-Looking Sonar (ULS) Data

چکیده

Moored upward-looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) can be used to observe sea ice draft. While previous studies relied on the availability of auxiliary pressure sensors measure instrument depth ADCP, we present an adaptive approach that infers from ADCP bottom track (BT) mode measurements error velocity and range. The ADCP-derived draft time series are validated with data adjacent Upward-Looking Sonar (ULS) moorings. We demonstrate this method obtain daily mean that, average, within 20% ULS-derived series. ULS were observed by four moorings in Laptev Sea show correlations between 0.7 0.9. This new is not a substitute for high-frequency, high-precision but it provides low-cost opportunity derive accessing existing have been purpose date. has potential close gaps extend all ice-covered regions supports validation thickness products satellite missions such as CryoSat-2, SMOS or ENVISAT.

Estimation of Surface Winds From Upward Looking Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers

Three upward looking acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP) were deployed beneath meteorological buoys in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, Mexico, during winter 1988-1989. Hourly averaged wind speed data from the buoys and from ship when in the vicinity were compared with surface acoustic backscatter intensity recorded at the ADCPs. The backscatter was found to be a significant predictor of wind spe...

“wavesonar” - an Upward-looking Sonar for Wave Measurements on the Continental Shelf

An upward-looking sonar instrument, the Ice Profiling Sonar (IPS), has been developed, and successfully used for obtaining time series measurements of ice keel depths over the continental shelves of the Arctic in support of scientific research. The IPS instrument capabilities have since been expanded to provide accurate measurement of ocean waves. This new instrument, the WaveSonar, uses a high...
